After finding very dry splines on my Valkyrie on the shaft that mates to the differential coupler I decided to check the Wing. It was OK, but with almost 33,000 miles it was past due for a checkup. The job was easier than I expected.
I raised the bike with a Larin lift just enough to remove the rear wheel. Following instructions are after removing the wheel.
Remove two bolts on the right mufler clamp.
Remove the one bolt holding the muffler to the frame.
Remove the muffler.
Remove the bolt that holds the clamp for the brake lines.
Remove the two bolts that hold the caliper and tie the caliper up out of the way. Do not put undue pressure on the brake lines.
Remove the four nuts holding the gear assembly to the swingarm.
Slide the assembly to the rear.
Once removed you will see the shaft. The manual says this shaft can be removed by just pulling it out. It has a ring stopper around the bottom end and it does a very fine job of holding the shaft in the gear assembly. If you have a very large friend...now is the time to invite him over for a beer. It will pull out, but can be difficult.
Once out you will need to lube the splines on both ends of the shaft with moly paste. Be sure to use moly paste, not grease. Also you will need to put some moly into the cup of the seal.
Assembly is the reverse of disassembly. One thing to be cautious about is to make sure the shaft actuall goes into the driveshaft when installing the gear assembly back onto the swingarm. If it is not in the proper alignment the bike will not move when you put it back together and you will have to take it back apart..Do you wonder how I know this.
Good luck
Bob
